Clay is mushy. Clay is messy. Clay gets all over my clothes and I never wear an apron. Clay is liberating!

Welcome to the new home of Hello, Earth Ceramics. I’m Laurel, a metalsmith turned sewist turned ceramicist. (perhaps all made up words). My ceramic jewelry is inspired by my metal and textile work, and includes lots of textures, color and wobbly forms.

All pieces are one of a kind, for I never like to do the same thing twice. They are made from porcelain as well as a stoneware clay called B mix. The pieces are lightweight, even the larger earrings.

I am happy to do custom work, so feel free to reach out.

And…the planet is in peril these days, and my materials, all of them, not just the clay, are reliant on this amazing sphere, we are all reliant on her and we owe her for her generosity, for taking care of us. So, let’s do what we can to take care of her. Vote for people who will protect her, grow your own food, ride a bike, up-cycle your clothes, turn off the lights, eat less meat…

Definitely slow jewelry. The first image is a greenware image, so no firing. The second image is after the bisque firing. They are a bit more vivid after being bisqued. Next I will glaze with clear and then do a final firing. Then they will be really bright and pretty. Completed pieces are going to be added to the shop soon. Hi there! It has been a very long time since I last posted, for I have fallen into a rabbit hole very deep and wide. Ceramics! I am currently experimenting with different clays and glazes and forms with the intention of creating a new ceramic jewelry line. It is slow going for I don't have a kiln but I found a cool ceramic studio not too far from me where I can have my pieces fired. These are pre-fired (greenware) and a few are bisque fired ( first firing). Experimenting with glaze and other fun things and very exciting to finally get some fully fired pieces back. , These are the examples and experiments I have been working on for the past month or so. New student work! I love this assignment, a pair of plexiglass rings. The goal is to transform the plexiglass using the most basic hand tools. Check out the skinny red and white bands, truly amazing craft. She carved these rounded forms from flat material. It's humbling and kinda cool to have young students (these kids are 15-17) who can out craft me from day one.
